Leadership in Service

The Jr./Sr. High School was selected by the Jefferson Awards Foundation and Students In Action as the Delaware Recipient For Outstanding Service by a High School and will represent the state at the Jefferson Awards National Ceremony and Gala Event held in Washington, DC in June. The school was selected by a panel of local judges for the students’ Leadership, Engagement and Impact around service in their school and for their philanthropic contribution to the community. They have helped to pave the way for greater volunteerism throughout Delaware.During the 2015-2016 school year, the vision of the NCS students was to Do Service, Promote Service and Love Service. In addition, 2016 Jefferson Awardthey aimed to encourage more community service participation with other school clubs and the entire student body. They hosted and partnered on many community service projects in support of local and global organizations. Just a few of their accomplishments included raising $500 for an international organization to aid victims of domestic violence, hosting a food drive that collected 2,700 lbs. of food to support the Food Bank of Delaware, collecting 500 books to support the local non-profit Success Can’t Wait, raising $600 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Delaware to help people suffering with blood cancer and raising $300 for the American Cancer Society. Through their efforts this year the Newark Charter Students In Action team has tracked over 5,500 service hours with a financial impact of over $122,000 to the community.The Jefferson Awards Foundation is the country’s longest standing and most prestigious organization dedicated to activating and celebrating public service.
