Homelessness Awareness
One of several career pathways Newark Charter High School students can choose is Global Contexts for Leadership. The pathway focuses on building leadership skills and learning about current economic, political, social and environmental issues. For the culminating capstone project, students are required to study a problem facing the community and research ways to address it. In March, juniors Rogelia Carrizales, Romelia Carrizales, Grace Delaney and Katie Hamelin organized and led a homelessness awareness night with the intention to inform the Newark Charter community about the issue of homelessness and how they can help. Following the student presentation and guests speaker, those in attendance packed 300 manna bags which contained snacks, toiletries, socks and other items to hand out to those in need in the Newark area. Grace Delaney reflected, “We wanted to make an impact. We’re taking our leadership skills and putting them to good use.” Two additional capstone projects presented this spring included water security and heroin abuse and addiction.
