Stock Market Challenge Success
Over the course of ten weeks this fall students in Mr. Justin Miller’s Economics/Personal Finance course competed in the Stock Market Challenge, a statewide competition coordinated by the University of Delaware. The goal of the competition, which is integrated into the Personal Finance curriculum, is to teach students about different investment approaches, how stock markets work, and how to determine/analyze risk in potential investment opportunities. A pair of NCS seniors – Morgan Parker and Jessica “Sena” Pak – were named the winners of the 107 team competition for growing their starting portfolio by 11.9%, easily surpassing the next best team that had a growth of 2.7%. Specifically, this team invested in a stock that over the course of two days rose in stock price over 70%. This led to a return on their investment of over $16,000! This is the second consecutive year that a team from Newark Charter High School has won the statewide competition.
